Visit Sha Tin Treatment Works

We all know what water is, because we can not live without it. Water is a very important resource for us, but not all the water is clean and good for us, so we must use it carefully. Process of Water Treatment is the great ‘hero’ who helps us to improve the water. Don’t waste water
On 20th of April, we went to visit Sha Tin Treatment Works. It is really a good chance for us to know how the ‘hero’ cleans the water. It needs many chemicals to help it, like Sulphate of Alumina, Hydrated Lime, Chlorine, Activated Carbon, Polyelectrolyte and so on. It also needs a lot of Water Channels to help it to undertake its great work. Of course, it has passed at least 7 steps to finish the work. The final water passing into supply shall be clear, colourless, palatable, reasonably soft and free from harmful bacteria or chemical substances.
As you know, if we drink a glass of water, our great ‘hero’ must do a lot of things. So, please save water as far as possible.

在四月二十日,我班很榮幸能夠參觀沙田濾水廠,在介紹員講解後,得知沙田濾水廠是全香港最大的濾水廠,在濾水廠內,具有先進及完善的配套設施,例如:化驗室,過濾池,淤泥濃化池,化學原料倉等,另外,濾水廠亦都經過多個處理過程完全符合國際間所定的食水標準才方可飲用,透過這次參觀活動可以增加化學科上的知識,更加可以學會節約用水.
在沙田濾水廠中,我可以清楚知道濾水廠中,擁有高科技的先進設施的運作系統,我們從而可以得到優質的食水,此外,在沙田濾水廠的過濾過程亦都較為講究,每一個步驟都很仔細,首先,由未經處理的原水首先使水中的懸浮顆粒沉澱,方法是把硫酸鋁加入水中,使懸浮固體結為較大的粒子,沉澱於池底部成為淤泥,經池處理的水隨而流入濾水池,懸浮於水中的較細小粒子即被分隔,並被濾水池中的無煙煤和沙層留住,水的顏色和混濁情況亦會在過濾的過程中去除,過濾後,繼而會加入熟石灰以中和水中的酸性,然後再注入氯溶液進行消毒以及加入氟化物以護齒,經過上述各項處理程序後,食水方能符合規定的標準,可供分配予各用戶.
最後,我們了解到食水處理過程和增加了我們的化學知識.
