Interview with Abby Lai

Lui Lai ing (7B)

Female DJs are not common, but don't suppose it is a man's job anymore. Abby Al accepted the challenge in 1986 to enter the male dominated world of DJ's. 13 years later, she is one of Hong Kong’ best-known and most highly skilled DJs. Abby was cheerful and optimistic throughout our conversation, but revealed that she feels a lot of pressure. Despite being confident that she is good at her job, she commented that she must try twice as hard and be twice as good as male DJs to do the same work they do.

Choosing a traditionally male job was not the only obstacle she had to overcome. coming from a business-orientated family, her parents didn't understand why she wanted to work in discos. They thought it was an unrealistic fantasy. Although her family didn't encourage her, they let her make her own decision and now she knows it was the right one.

DJ booth and how she uses the equipment and explained that she has to concentrate hard when she plays because people depend on her to play the music they enjoy. `` When I am playing I look very serious, but I don't bother about what people think about me when I'm working." Abby said seriously.

During the interview l was impressed by her wonderfully positive attitude towards her job. Probably the most memorable thing that she told me was,"If you want to do something, you can do it!"
