Learning from voluntary work
Leung Yun-ping ( 6C )
Have you ever thought of joining voluntary work? I think there must be some
organizations near your home which are looking for volunteers.
Have you ever paid attention to them? I have been a volunteer since I was
in S2.
I looked at the posters of the YMCA when I was waiting for the lift one day.
The project was about taking care of the elderly. Most of the members of the
group are much older than me.
I did not contribute much in the meetings because I was so bashful. Doing
voluntary work requires high team spirit and you should be an extrovert.
I learned to change myself. I gained more experience and learned how to hold
meetings and get on well with people from different backgrounds.
Being a volunteer is not just helping the needy, it is an exercise in self-development.
There are many things that we cannot learn from books. The job requires you
to experience them. It will broaden your horizons and benefit your whole life.
I am still a volunteer at the YMCA. When I look at the happy faces of people
I have helped, I forget all my tiredness.
Of course, there are problems we face when planning programmes or promoting
activities. It's life! You will never feel happy without putting any effort
into your work. So, why not contact the centres near your homes and join these
meaningful services now?
