OBESITY is a common phenomenon in modern society. According to the statistical research conducted by the University of Hong Kong, the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority, 6 per cent of Hong Kong people are overweight.

The figures also reveal that 6 per cent of people are suffering from serious obesity. The number of children being obese has risen progressively because of our contemporary lifestyle. In the past, the children often suffered from insufficient nutrition for growth and development, whereas children nowadays can eat practically anything they want.

However, many place no importance on a balanced diet. The experts who conducted the survey are anxious about the problem of the growing number of children who are overweight. They agree that obesity increases health risks. Overweight children are prone to many diseases. So it is now that the problem must be addressed.

First, children living in Hong Kong lack sufficient exercise probably because there is not much room to move around anyway. The average family lives in limited space because of the limitations of rent. Children watch television or play video games, which provide to exercise.

Appropriate and sufficient exercise is beneficial for our health. During exercise, we can increase the metabolic rate of our bodies, enjoy increased blood circulation, and burn off excess calories. Exercise prevents calories from being converted info fat and then accumulating in blood passages.

Moreover, proper exercising can strengthen our body defenses and ward off the invasion of various viruses and bacteria. Students should take the initiative to participate in sports at school, because it is the best opportunity we have to keep fit.

But at the same time, eating habits are equally important. Because of stressful studying and examinations, students often ignore the need to eat properly. They miss regular meal times and frequently overeat when they do.

Students having lunch outside schools often go to fast-food restaurants where the food is fatty and unhealthy. Parents ought to be aware of their children's diet because their children often do not choose food that is good for them.

Parents must spend more time on their children's meal.

The one crucial point is self-control. Students must control their intake of food every day. They should eat more carbohydrates, vegetables and fruit, which contain high level of vitamins.

Finally, obesity is unwelcome for all. All students wish to have a fit or slim build because of the better appearance it affords. Therefore, be conscious of the important of a wholesome diet and regular exercise.
