What makes the perfect teacher?

Mandy Yeung (7A)

EDUCATION plays an important role in today's Hong Kong because our community is an information and technology society.

Knowledge has become an essential element of our daily lives and economy. Schools are the major venues for students to absorb knowledge. And teachers are the guiding principle in teaching and helping students.

The requirements for an excellent teacher are very demanding. In my opinion, k perfect teachers are like angels. First they should have professional judgement to cater to students' individual needs because the abilities of students differ.

Therefore in order to be a good teacher you have to meet the special needs of individual students.

Second, a good teacher needs to take a bigger role in shouldering responsibility because they are the people who influence students a lot, especially in early education.

So teachers should be good models for students. It is very important.

Now, let's move to another consideration in the aims of education. I think learning should be focused upon students' personal development. There should be more room and flexibility for students to masters of their own learning rather than giving them a spoon-fed" education.

The aim of education should allow the talented to excel, but at the same time not to give up any students. There should be good teachers who use appropriate teaching methods to help students fully develop their own potential and strengths. Learning should bring enjoyment and create opportunities for everyone. The future of a society depends on what kind of education we give our youths.

The above concepts of education were not developed by myself. Actually I got these ideas through an important person. Who is he? Let me tell you. He is my Secondary One mathematics teacher.

Besides cultivating mathematics knowledge in us, he also liked to help us in considering some other meaningful things that are related to our lives.

One day he said, "Students' learning should not only be confined to classrooms or the subject contents. Besides enhancing basic knowledge, students should have a comprehensive learning experience to develop their multi-level intelligence. Having all-rounded performance is more important than obtaining high marks in the academic examinations. Girls, I hope you will remember this and maintain healthy, lifelong learning habits in the future."

I remain deeply influenced by his every word. I can learn a lot from him. He is a perfect teacher. He loves his students and is patient to them. He helps them when they encounter difficulties at school or home. He won't give up any students, no matter how bad they are. Maybe he is a Christian; therefore he seems to have a special thing that the other teachers may lack- that is "love"..

"Love" is a magic bridge that links people together. If all teachers use their hearts to teach and show concern for their students, certainly the aims of education will be reached eventually.
