Visiting top-class container terminal
Mok Wan-yee (4D)

On November 21, my class visited the Hong Kong International Terminals with our English teacher. HKIT is the world's leading container terminal operator. We went there by coach. A group corporate affairs officer, Ms Tobias, came out and received us.

On the 12th floor, there was a Kwai Chung container port model. Ms Tobias explained how HKIT operated Terminals 4, 6 and 7. We asked a lot of questions. Ms Tobias said: " On a busy day, more than 10,000 container trucks enter HKIT's terminals. It's one of the largest-scale transportation systems in the world."

Then she took us to the Control Tower. My classmates were interested in the advanced control system because half of us majored in computers. The system can create graphic displays of the entire container yard and has the ability to zoom in on one container, revealing the contents, destination and other information.

Afterwards, we were taken on a short yard tour. There were many huge cranes, which are electrically operated. We saw a lot of machines, heavy goods vehicles, containers and container ships. I saw some of the world's largest container vessels. However, Ms Tobias said: "Those ships are not ours. We provide our electrical machines to help them stack containers."

A classmate asked Ms Tobias about qualifications required to work for HKIT. Ms Tobias said he could apply for a position after finishing Secondary Five. Before we left, our monitor thanked Ms Tobias on our behalf.
