We were bored one day, so my friend and I went to Mannings. There were many women who were liberal with their money. They would buy something they liked without looking at the price.

When I was looking at a lipstick, a shop assistant came over. I thought the lipstick was too expensive, but the saleswoman persuaded me to buy it.

After I paid, I felt I was a poor girl because my purse was nearly empty. I thought if a person robbed me, he would be out of luck. No wonder my mother says that women and money are easily parted.

Thanks for your letter, Kwai-ying. You learnt an important lesson about money that day in Mannings.

The sales assistant was only doing her job by trying to persuade you to buy the lipstick. And clearly she did her job very well, because you bought the lipstick even though you thought it was too expensive.

Next time you go shopping, I suggest you put the money you can afford to spend in one section of your purse, and don't let yourself spend any more than that - no matter how good the salesperson's pitcth is.

And another suggestion, don't go shopping to kill boredom.
