Tense Table 時態表
I. Simple Present
簡單現在式
Form: 形式

  Singular Plural
1st person I drink. I don't drink. Do I drink? We drink. We don't drink. Do we drink?
2nd person You drink. You don't drink. Do you drink? You drink. You don't drink. Do you drink?
3rd person He/She/It drinks. He/She/It doesn't drink. Does he/she/it drink? They drink. They don't drink. Do they drink?

Use:
1. For habitual actions 用以表達習慣行為
Dogs bark.

He does not smoke.
We go to church every Sunday.
2.For facts or truths 用以表達事實
The earth moves round the sun.
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Beijing is the capital of China.

Form:

  Singular Plural

Use:
1. For an action happening now. 用以表達正在進行的動作
Listen! The baby is crying.
I am listening to the radio.
What are you doing now?

2.For plans for the near future
用以表達即將進行的計劃
I am going to the theatre tonight.
We are having a picnic next Monday.

Is he visiting his parents this Sunday?

1. For completed actions in the past 用以表達過去完成的動作
I didn't go to school yesterday.
He visited London in 1998.
He read the question carefully, made a detailed plan and wrote a long essay.

2. For past habits 用以表達過去的習慣
He always carried an umbrella to school.
They never drank wine.
I learned French when I was in primary school.

IV. Past Continuous 過去進行式
Form: 形式

  Singular Plural

Use:

For an action going on during a certain time in the past 用以表達過去一段時間發生的動作
At midnight, we were still watching a film in the cinema.
I was playing basketball all this morning. What were you doing?
While my mother was cooking in the kitchen, we were listening to music.

V. Present Perfect 現在完成式
Form:形式

  Singular Plural

Use:

1. For past actions whose time is not given. 用以表達沒有提供時間的過去動作
I have read the instructions but I don't understand them. (time is not given)
Have you had breakfast? No, I haven't had it yet. (time is not given)
Note: I read the instructions last year. (time given, use simple past)
Have you seen my stamps?
Yes, I have. (time is not given)
Yes, I saw them on your desk a minute ago. (time given, use sim
ple past)
2. For an action which begins in the past and still goes on.用以表達一個在過去開始而仍然進行的動作
He has been in the army for two years. (he is still in the army)
I have smoked since I left school. (I still smoke)

Ann has loved chocolate since she was a little girl. (She still loves it)

VI. Present Perfect Continuous 現在完成進行式

or an action which began in the past and is still continuing 用以表達動作在過去發生而現在仍繼續
Miss Chan has been teaching in our school for three years.
We have been painting this wall for the whole morning.
I have been trying for a long time now but I have not succeeded yet.

For a past action which occurred before another past event. 用以表達一個過去動作比另一個過去事情較早發生
When we arrived at the station, the train had already left.
He had just gone out when it began to rain.
By the time Tom finished his studies, he had been in New York for over five years.
